tnsManager is a more robust alternative to using file shares or SMS for centralized tnsnames distribution and management.
Simply place tnsManager into a directory with a tnsnames.ora and it will serve it to your client workstations using LDAP. No additional workstation software is required, and best of all it's completely free!
How does tnsManager work?
tnsManager acts a bit like a DNS server for Oracle. Since version 8i the Oracle client has included built-in support for LDAP names resolution. So, when asked to connect to a database, rather than looking at a tnsnames.ora, the client can instead query an LDAP directory (more info)
tnsManager is basically a very compact and focussed LDAP server; in fact all it has been designed to do is serve tnsnames - nothing else. Because of this, it requires very few system resources and it is extremely simple to configure - it usually takes less than 10 minutes to install!
Client compatibility
tnsManager is compatible with the following Oracle client versions (on any platform): 8i, 9i, 10g & 11g. It also works with the Oracle instant client (10.1.0.4 and later).
System requirements
tnsManager is available for Linux (intel) and MS Windows, although it is capable of distributing tnsnames.ora to any platform (Windows, Tru64, HP-UX, etc.). It requires only 2MB of memory and 500KB of disk space.
